What is a time server used for in a data centre?

Context

What is a time server used for in a data centre?

Oceanet Technology has been operating as a data hosting company, IT operator and security specialist for more than 25 years (Since July 2021, Oceanet Technology is a Business Unit of Céleste group.) Historically located in Nantes and Paris cities, OT supports companies in designing, migrating and securing their IT infrastructure in the private and public cloud computing (AWS and Azure). The company also manages the outsourcing of its clients’ data 24/7. It ensures that data are kept secure and protected. The company works for customers in different sectors : food industry, banking, retail, e-commerce, manufacturing, software development and healthcare.

Everyday, billions of data items are organised, processed, registered and stored in traditional data centres or in the cloud systems. For either professional or personal purposes; making an online purchase or sharing electronic working documents would be impossible without these data centres. They are crucial for all types of companies : when IT networks are disfunctioning, economic activities of companies can brought to a standstill.

Worldwilde, the data centre market is flourishing and should see sustained growth over the next few years due to several reasons : the digitalisation of many services, the globalization, the rise of connected devices, remote working. In the age of big data, it is therefore important that active devices operating on an network are all set to the same, correct time – and that applies for hosting companies just as much as for outsourcing companies or its customers. Timeservers can meet this need.

The requirement

To manage client data, a reliable and precise data source is required.

The task of an IT operator such as Oceanet Technology is to provide all of its clients an optimum service. The main expectation was therefore to be able to get reliable synchonisation for all IT equipment.

Oceanet Technology’s Saint-Herblain-based site has numerous devices, such as central computers, routers, switches, IT servers, and storage bays. It is important to be able to synchronise all of these devices to get reliable and precise data sources with a continuous time signal.

The second expectation was to be able to have access to event logs in order to analyse and group them together.A server set to the wrong time can lead to numerous problems when performing these various analyses. Logs are text files containing debugging information which can help technical support teams analyse various problems on the system. Having access to a time server’s event logs provides a better overview of a problem’s chronology, with coherent and accurate time stamping.

The Netsilon 11, a time server appropriate for the data centre market

The solution

The Netsilon 11, a time server appropriate for the data centre market

The Netsilon 11 was installed in June 2021 in the server room at the Saint-Herblain site.

The time server retrieve the GNSS signal (GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou) via a multi-constellation Bodet antenna, which was installed at the same time outside the buildings.

At Oceanet’s request, the Netsilon was customised to meet their own specific needs:

  • It was fitted with a dual power supply to ensure continuous operation in the event of a fault with the primary power supply
  • Fibre connectors were added to provide a level of to provide network redundancy

Client testimonial

“Oceanet Technology has been working on various projects with the Bodet group since 2011.

As projects are undertaken, a strong relationship has been developed between our two companies. That's why we decided to work with Bodet company for this project.

We have been using Bodet products ourselves for several years and have complete confidence in the quality of its products and services. This gives us a quality of service from the outset that we can then deliver to our clients. Today, all of our client servers and infrastructure (HPE, for example) are synchronised with the Netsilon time source. The NTP (Network Time Protocol) can be used to create networks made up of entities with multiple levels of redundancy so as to ensure the machines connected are synchronised on a continuous basis with a hight level of accuracy. The NTP available on a timesever is the best solution to get traceability that is requiered for infrastructure to operate properly. Since the Netsilon time server was installed, we have seen a significant enhancement in the reliability of the data source.

Regarding the project follow-up, we were very statisfied by the quick response of the technical support during the installation and the easy setting-up of the solution.”
